Dramatic images from Assam-Nagaland border flashpoint at Dissoi Valley Reserve Forest in Assam’s Mariani district as unidentified Nagaland miscreants resort to unprovoked firing of bullets upon Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi and a team of local community leaders, Assam police personnel and journalists who were out to investigate a newly encroached site in the area on Thursday.
Assam’s local legislator Rupjyoti Kurmi accompanied by mediapersons, locals and Assam police personnel, were proceeding on foot towards the site of new encroachment deep inside Dissoi reserve forest to investigate the quantum of encroachment of Assam’s forest areas in Dissoi reserve forest by miscreants from Nagaland side.
Assam police personnel fired back on the unidentified gunmen from Nagaland side and provided cover fire for the opposition legislator of Assam Rupjyoti Kurmi and his touring team of civilians to pull back from the hotspot of encroachment.
The incident triggered outrage across Assam and the state’s new Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered for a high level inquiry into the incident describing the incident as deplorable and unacceptable.
